Windfall Tax on unjust Oil & Gas Company Profits / Stop Subsidizing Oil & Gas:
Canada's oil and gas sector tripled its profits in 2022. Meanwhile, the rest of us struggle with surging prices and more extreme weather. It’s time to make polluters pay their fair share. We know we can’t trust these companies to direct their record profits into climate solutions. Our government needs to take the decision out of their hands with a Windfall Profits Tax. Cap on Oil & Gas Emissions:
The federal government is deciding on a new approach to cap the oil and gas sector, limiting the emissions industry is allowed to produce and making sure those emissions go down over time. Oil and gas sector is the largest and fastest growing source of pollution in Canada. That’s why the industry is ready to attack the upcoming policy, using their lobbying power to delay, weaken and undermine the new rule. Climate-Aligned Finance Act:
Canadian financial institutions continue to finance fossil fuel expansion. They cannot be trusted to take the right actions themselves, Bill S-243 would ensure Canada’s banks develop credible plans in line with climate science and commitments, address conflicts of interest between financial institutions and the fossil fuel industry, and help us avoid carbon lock-in and enshrine respect for Indigenous peoples. Advertising Rules:
Fossil Fuel ads make us sick. Fossil fuel ads fail to inform us about the known health and environmental hazards of their products. Fossil fuel advertising undermines Canada’s climate commitments. Fossil fuel greenwashing obstructs climate action. This campaign by Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE) is pushing for banning certain advertising and add regulations. Clean Electricity Standard:
On Aug 10, 2023, the government of Canada released draft Clean Electricity Regulations for public comment. If passed the regulations would come into force on Jan 1, 2025 and limit carbon emissions produced by electricity generated using fossil fuels in an effort to ultimately eliminate emitting sources of supply connected to public electricity grids in Canada. Sustainable Jobs Act (C-50):
While the Act contains some important gains for climate justice, it falls significantly short in scope and ambition and is far from what it needs to be to support workers, communities, and Canada’s climate commitments. The Sustainable Jobs Act has just gone through its second reading, which means it has been debated in the House of Commons and is now headed to committee for amendments. This is a key moment to demand the Sustainable Jobs Act that we need by asking for some key amendments. Learn more and sign online:

JUST TRANSITION
We call for social, economic and environmental justice as the world moves toward a global low-carbon economy. Many fossil fuel industry workers support climate solutions that lead to net zero carbon jobs, as long as they have access to those jobs. We need different levels of government to step forward to create incentives and funding so that well paying green jobs are available now. Let’s not support a sunset industry hurtling towards an economic cliff.
MOVE THE MONEY
We call for windfall profits of oil and gas companies to be taxed. Let’s move the money towards supporting climate solutions such as community renewable projects and other green jobs such as retrofitting housing.
GREEN SAFE AFFORDABLE HOUSING
Another nature place for money and incentives to be redirected is Green Safe Affordable Housing. Whether it is new housing or energy retrofits (conserve energy + solar) it is at the intersection of Climate Justice, Climate Solutions and Sustainability. Much more of the money will stay local to the community.
