FRIDAY JULY 30, 2021
NOON-2PM
Londoner Jamie Ranney was joined by 20 Climate Action London volunteers to raise awareness of the importance of protecting Old Growth Forests. Jamie came fresh from the front lines of the protest at Fairy Creek. We obtained signatures from 150 supporters which will be forwarded to the Environment Minister Jonathon Wilkinson and local MPs.
Here is what the media had to say about the event:
You can still take action by sending a message to the Environment Minister and your MP

What can WE ASK of the federal government?
Canadian Old Growth forests are under threat. Their destruction and mismanagement will accelerate climate change, biodiversity loss and in many cases logging is contrary to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). I urge you to exercise Federal responsibilities in the Old Growth logging in British Columbia
Commit to the principles of UNDRIP, recognizing the rights and title of Indigenous peoples and their stewardship of these lands
Protect Old Growth Forests and follow through on the government's commitment to protect 30% of Canada’s terrestrial areas by 2030. Protecting Old Growth forests will protect intact ecosystems that are areas of high biodiversity value
The federal gov’t should provide financing for First Nations land protection initiatives and support sustainable economic alternatives to old-growth logging for the First Nations communities in these unceded territories
Uphold your carbon emission reduction commitments by protecting the Old Growth Forests that act as a massive carbon sink
Work with the B.C. gov’t to focus on currently available second growth forests that can provide for a healthy forest economy

Political Action
Green MP Paul Manly delivers a speech in Parliament advocating for protection of Old Growth Forests.
Responded to by Terry Duguid, Parliamentary Secretary and the Minister of Western Economic Development
The government clearly needs to hear from more Canadians about this.

Here are answers to commong questions like:
What about forestry jobs and the economy? How will they survive if all the old-growth is protected?
Do governments actually listen to conservationists’ concerns?
Aren’t forests a renewable resource? What’s wrong with logging old-growth forests as long as the trees are planted and grow back?
What is the difference between a second-growth forest and an old-growth forest?
Isn’t it better for the climate if we cut down the old-growth forests and replace them with healthy, faster-growing, young trees?
Why do logging companies want to log old-growth forests?
Isn’t there still a lot of old-growth forest left in BC? That’s what provincial government says.
How much old-growth forest remains?
I thought old-growth logging was no longer occurring?
